Fixed and Flexible Phrase Structure: Coordination in Tree Adjoining Grammars
نویسندگان
چکیده
In this paper, we show how a CCG-like account for coordination can be constructed in the framework of lexicalized tree-adjoining grammars (TAGs) (Joshi, 1987; Schabes et al., 1988; Schabes, 1990). 2. In particular, we show how a fixed constituency can be maintained at the level of the elementary trees of lexicalized TAGs and yet be able to achieve the kind of flexibility needed for dealing with the so-called non-constituents. This is the key significance of this contribution. In a CCG, being a constituent is the same as being a function. We show that this need not be the case and standard notions of constituency can be maintained. The key idea is that we use the lexicalized trees of TAG as structured categories with the associated functional types. Because of lack of space, we will illustrate our ideas by examples only.

متن کاملThings between Lexicon and Grammar
A number of grammar formalisms were proposed in 80’s, such as Lexical Functional Grammars, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammars, and Tree Adjoining Grammars. Those formalisms then started to put a stress on lexicon, and were called as lexicalist (or lexicalized) grammars. Representative examples of lexicalist grammars were Head-driven Phrase Structure Grammars (HPSG) and Lexicalized Tree Adjoi...
متن کاملImplications of Binding for Lexicalized Grammars
Vijay-Shanker and Weir 1990 have shown that the most basic form of Tree-adjoining grammars (TAG) and Combinatory Categorial Grammars (CCG) are weakly equivalent. Nevertheless, actual grammars and analyses for fragments of natural languages in the two frameworks appear very diierent. In particular , in order to capture coordination, unbounded dependency, and intonation structure, CCG and a numbe...
متن کاملCoordination in Tree Adjoining Grammars: Formalization and Implementation
In this paper we show that an account for coordination can be constructed using the derivation structures in a lexicalized Tree Adjoining Grammar (LTAG). We present a notion of derivation in LTAGs that preserves the notion of fixed constituency in the LTAG lexicon while providing the flexibility needed for coordination phenomena. We also discuss the construction of a practical parser for LTAGs ...
متن کاملFrom Treebanks to Tree-Adjoining Grammars
Grammars are valuable resources for natural language processing. A large-scale grammar may incorporate a vast amount of information on morphology, syntax, and semantics. Traditionally, grammars are built manually. Hand-crafted grammars often contain rich information, but require tremendous human effort to build and maintain. As large-scale treebanks become available in the last decade, there ha...
